ACT 1 – THE ROLE

We have a unique opportunity for a Technical Portfolio Manager to join our UK and Ireland Technical Services department. Reporting into the Director of Technical services, the Portfolio Manager will oversee the delivery of all ongoing and new projects across Technical Services.

Main responsibilities:

  • Identify opportunities for improvement in standards and processes through project reviews
  • Create, define and maintain comprehensive project:
    • standards (e.g. for project progress reporting)
    • processes (e.g. for user acceptance testing)
    • templates
  • Work with project managers and other team members to ensure projects are managed consistently and in line with standards and processes
  • Act as the internal expert on best practice project management; assist Project managers in delivering their projects successfully
  • Work closely with project managers to advise on the most suitable project approach (e.g. agile vs waterfall)
  • Participate in planning activity for projects: helping project managers to create plans that balance risk, budget, time and other constraints
  • Recommend and help in the implementation of appropriate project governance models
  • Review project budgets
  • Provide reporting templates to project managers
  • Ensure project status reports are issued regularly
  • Track project progress against key milestones
  • Act at the bridge between project managers and the Director of Technical Services, regularly updating them with a summary of key risks issues and highlights
  • Act as an escalation point for Project managers
  • Work with project managers to identify issues which may affect project success
  • Works with project managers to identify solutions and resolve issues appropriately
  • Escalates issues with high potential impact to senior management
  • Advises senior management on issue resolution
  • Work with colleagues in Group, other territories and other UK&I functions to identify efficient and successful methods for project delivery; and where appropriate implements those methods with project managers within Technical Services projects

ACT 2 – WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL NEED

Essential

  • A proven track record of delivering technical projects on-time, within budget and to a high standard
  • Broad knowledge of project management techniques including planning, risk management and status reporting
  • Good knowledge of programme and project management methods including traditional (e.g. Prince2) and Agile methods
  • Proficient in budgeting and resource allocation procedures
  • Experienced in report writing; able to write-up business cases and reports
  • Good sense of humour

Desirable

  • Experience gained within a Retail, Hospitality or Leisure environment
  • Experience in a multi-project business such as a consultancy or agency
